Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how Google sees your website. It is one of the most useful tools for any business with a website, and it takes only a few minutes to set up.
Setting it up
- 1Sign in with a Google account owned by your business.
- 2Add your website as a property. The Domain property covers all versions of your site.
- 3Verify ownership, usually through a DNS record at your domain provider.
- 4Submit your XML sitemap under the Sitemaps section.
The reports that matter most
Performance
Shows the searches your site appears for, with clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position. Filter by page, query, country and device to understand what is working.
Pages (indexing)
Shows which pages are indexed and why others are not, such as duplicates, redirects, noindex tags or crawl issues. Focus on pages you want indexed that are missing.
Core Web Vitals and page experience
Summarises real-user performance for groups of pages. See Core Web Vitals explained.
Enhancements
Shows structured data detected on your site, such as breadcrumbs, products or FAQs, and any errors.
Links
Shows which external sites link to you and how your pages link to each other internally.
Practical monthly routine
- Check indexing for new errors.
- Look for queries with many impressions but few clicks, then improve those page titles and descriptions.
- Find pages ranking just outside the top results and strengthen their content.
- Review Core Web Vitals after site changes.
Using it with other tools
Search Console shows search visibility. Google Analytics 4 shows what visitors do after they arrive. Use both together. See our GA4 setup guide.
