Stone-studded jewellery, including kundan, polki-style and American diamond pieces, collects dust and loses sparkle over time. Cleaning it the wrong way can loosen stones or damage plating. Gentle, dry methods are safest.
What you need
- A soft, dry microfibre cloth.
- A clean, soft makeup brush or very soft toothbrush.
- Cotton buds.
Step-by-step
- 1Dust off: use the soft brush to remove dust from settings and crevices.
- 2Wipe: gently wipe metal surfaces with the microfibre cloth.
- 3Detail: use a dry cotton bud around stones and edges.
- 4Inspect: check for loose stones and set aside any piece that needs repair.
- 5Store: return the piece to its box immediately.
What to avoid
- Soaking in water or cleaning solutions, which can loosen glued stones and damage the backing.
- Toothpaste, baking soda or abrasive polishes.
- Ultrasonic cleaners, which are not suitable for imitation jewellery.
- Pressing hard on stones.
Prevent build-up
Wipe pieces after each wear and store them in closed boxes. Prevention is easier than cleaning.
