Maang Tikka and Matha Patti: How to Choose and Wear Them

The difference between maang tikka and matha patti, which suits your face and hairstyle, and how to wear them comfortably for weddings and festivals.

By Venus Digital Corporation2 min read

Head jewellery adds a regal finishing touch to bridal and festive looks. The two most popular styles are the maang tikka and the matha patti.

Maang tikka

A single pendant worn at the centre of the forehead, attached to a chain that runs along the hair parting.

  • Suits: most face shapes and occasions, from festivals to weddings.
  • Styles: small pendants for guests, larger kundan or polki-style pieces for brides.

Matha patti

A more elaborate piece with side chains that frame the forehead, along with a central tikka.

  • Suits: brides and grand occasions.
  • Best with: a centre parting and hairstyles that keep the side chains visible.

Choosing by face shape

  1. 1Round faces: a longer maang tikka adds length.
  2. 2Long faces: a matha patti or wider tikka adds width.
  3. 3Oval faces: most styles work.

Comfort and security

  • Pin the chain securely with bobby pins along the parting.
  • Use a hook at the back of the hair for matha patti side chains.
  • Practise wearing it before the event.

Maharashtrian note

Traditional Maharashtrian bridal looks often feature the mundavalya on the forehead rather than a maang tikka, though many modern brides combine elements. See bridal imitation jewellery for Maharashtrian weddings.
