Building a web application, such as a customer portal, booking system or internal tool, is a structured process. Understanding each stage helps you plan time, budget and your own involvement.
1. Discovery
The goal is to understand the problem before designing a solution.
- Who will use the application, and what are they trying to do?
- What happens today, and where does it break?
- What data is involved, and which other systems must connect?
- How will success be measured?
The output is a clear scope with priorities.
2. Planning and architecture
Decide the technology, data structure, integrations, security approach and hosting. Break the scope into phases, with the most valuable features first.
3. Design
Create user flows and interface designs for key screens. Reviewing clickable prototypes with real users at this stage is far cheaper than changing finished code.
4. Development
Build in short cycles, with regular demonstrations so you can see progress and give feedback. Each cycle should produce working features, not just partial code.
5. Testing
- Functional testing of every feature.
- Testing on different browsers and devices.
- Security checks for authentication, permissions and data handling.
- Performance testing under realistic use.
- User acceptance testing by your team.
6. Launch
Migrate data, set up production hosting, monitoring and backups, train users and launch, ideally at a quieter time for your business.
7. Support and improvement
After launch, fix issues quickly, monitor usage and plan the next set of improvements based on real feedback.
Ownership and documentation
Make sure you receive the code, documentation and account access needed to run and maintain the application.
