How to Layer Necklaces for Ethnic and Western Outfits

Practical rules for layering necklaces, from traditional choker-and-haar combinations to modern pendant stacks, without the look becoming cluttered.

By Venus Digital Corporation2 min read

Layered necklaces add depth and richness to an outfit. In traditional Maharashtrian looks, layering a thushi with a saaj is a classic combination. In modern styling, fine chains and pendants are stacked for a relaxed look. The principles are similar.

Rule 1: Vary the lengths

Leave visible space between each layer. A common approach:

  • First layer: choker or short necklace.
  • Second layer: princess or matinee length.
  • Third layer (optional): long necklace.

Rule 2: Vary the weight

Combine one heavier piece with lighter ones. Two heavy necklaces together can feel crowded.

Rule 3: Keep a common thread

Stick to one metal tone, or one theme such as pearls or kundan, so the layers look intentional.

Traditional layering ideas

  1. 1Thushi with Kolhapuri saaj.
  2. 2Chinchpeti with tanmani.
  3. 3Temple choker with a long coin haar.

See our guides to Kolhapuri saaj and thushi.

Modern layering ideas

  1. 1Two fine chains with small pendants at different lengths.
  2. 2A pearl strand with a slim gold-toned chain.
  3. 3A choker with a single long pendant.

Avoiding tangles

Layer necklaces with different chain types, or use a necklace spacer clasp. Put on the shortest necklace first.
