A new website should improve your business, not erase the search visibility you have built. Many redesigns in Pune and elsewhere lose traffic because URLs change without redirects, content is removed or technical settings are left in test mode. Careful planning prevents this.
Before the redesign
- 1Crawl the current site and export every URL, title, meta description and heading.
- 2Export performance data from Google Search Console and Analytics: which pages bring traffic and enquiries.
- 3Record backlinks to identify pages other websites link to.
- 4Benchmark current rankings, traffic and Core Web Vitals.
Plan content and URLs
- Keep URLs that perform well unchanged where possible.
- Do not remove pages that bring traffic unless you replace them with something better.
- Map every old URL to its new equivalent in a spreadsheet.
During development
- Keep the new site on a staging environment blocked from search engines.
- Carry over titles, meta descriptions, headings and structured data, improving them where useful.
- Build to performance and accessibility standards from the start.
At launch
- 1Implement 301 redirects from every old URL to the correct new one.
- 2Remove any staging noindex tags or password protection.
- 3Update the XML sitemap and submit it in Search Console.
- 4Check robots.txt allows crawling.
- 5Confirm analytics and conversion tracking work.
After launch
- Monitor Search Console daily for the first weeks: coverage errors, 404s and redirect issues.
- Watch traffic for key pages and fix any unexpected drops quickly.
- Update important external links, such as your Google Business Profile, to the new URLs.
Some fluctuation is normal for a few weeks while search engines reprocess the site. Large or lasting drops usually point to a missed redirect or technical issue.
