Gudi Padwa marks the Marathi New Year. In Pune, it is celebrated with gudis raised outside homes, rangoli, puran poli and colourful shobha yatras where many women wear nauvari sarees and traditional jewellery. It is one of the best occasions to wear the full Maharashtrian look.
The traditional look
- Nath as the centrepiece of the face. See our nath guide.
- Thushi or chinchpeti as a choker.
- Saaj, mohanmal or laxmi haar as a longer necklace.
- Traditional earrings or jhumkas.
- Green glass bangles with gold-toned bangles.
- Chandrakor bindi and a gajra in the hair.
For shobha yatras
Processions involve walking, dancing and sometimes riding bikes. Choose:
- Secure clip-on or well-fitted naths.
- Necklaces that will not swing too much.
- Comfortable earrings for several hours of wear.
For celebrations at home
Choose a lighter version: a choker, simple earrings and bangles with a silk or cotton saree.
Saree and colour pairing
Gudi Padwa often features bright colours such as yellow, orange, green and pink. Gold-toned jewellery with pearls and red or green stones suits them all.
Men and children
Traditional looks for the whole family often include simple pieces for children, such as light bangles or small pendants. Choose child-safe, lightweight designs and supervise young children.
